Having become the owner of 6 acres, the summer resident seeks to make the most of his site. Experienced farmers have found a way to grow a large number of vegetables in a small area. To do this, they use a mixed planting principle.

Planting onions and carrots

Some cultures get along well with each other, while others show ardent antagonism. Therefore, before setting up a joint garden, they study the features of vegetable crops, their ability to coexist.

Onions and carrots on the same bed perfectly coexist, complementing each other, despite the fact that they have different planting dates. Each vegetable has its own enemies, which are frightened off by the neighboring culture. Carrots with the smell of tops will chase the onion fly away, and the onion vegetable with a "fungicidal" aroma will protect the root crop from pests.

Onions and carrots in the same garden complement each other perfectly

Planting carrots and onions on the same bed turns out to be dense, but this does not prevent crops from organically developing side by side - they have a different ripening period. By the time the turnip gains mass, the root crop will only begin to form. Harvesting onions, the gardener conducts high-quality loosening of the soil in this way, creating favorable conditions for carrots to grow.

By themselves, root crops can be planted not only during the period when winter is gone - seeds are also sown in summer and autumn. Onions are sown on a turnip at the beginning of the growing season. When exactly to plant carrots and onions together in spring depends on what kind of planting material the summer resident will take (nigella, sevok, or uses seedlings).

Onion seeds are cold-resistant and germinate at 2-4 degrees Celsius. Therefore, nigella can be sown as soon as the snow melts and the earth warms up a little. As for carrots, their seeds are sent to the ground when the soil is ripe for planting (in the Moscow region it is April or May), which is 3-4 weeks later than planting nigella.

If the summer resident uses sevok, then the crops can be planted at the same time, or the onion can be sent to the garden a little later than the root seeds. Seedlings are planted on the garden bed when it is ready to be transferred to open ground.

On a note. Experienced gardeners already intuitively determine when to plant vegetable crops. For beginners in agriculture, it is recommended to use the lunar calendar offered by astrologers for each season as a guide. It lists favorable days for planting carrots and beets with onions.

How to plant a garden in spring

The main crop on the joint bed will be carrots, so the site is prepared according to its requirements. This is done in the fall: the soil is dug up and, if necessary, cultivated to a depth of 10-15 cm (for long root crops even up to 30 cm). Phosphorus and potassium should predominate in mineral fertilizers. It is not recommended to introduce manure - root crops do not like it.

In the spring, the site does not require special processing - it is enough to loosen the soil a little. The planting scheme for vegetable crops will depend on the area allocated for the garden. The markings are best done with a twine, fixed on two stakes and stretched to the full length.

Planting in spring

If there is enough space, then carrots and onions can be alternated as many times as they fit in the garden. In this case, the distance between the furrows is maintained on the order of 15-20 cm.

In narrow beds, crops are planted in a strip 12-15 cm wide, in the center of which carrot seeds are sown, and onions on both sides (as a border). If it is supposed to lay several aligned strips, then the distance between them is kept at 30 cm.

The beds are marked out before the planting of vegetable crops begins. Even if the sowing dates do not coincide, it will be easier for the gardener to annoy the “neighbors” without interfering with the already rooted seeds.

Before laying the seeds in the soil, ash with sawdust is poured onto the bottom of the intended grooves and moistened. When the groove is filled, it is sprinkled and the earth is tamped.

Growing vegetables in regions such as Siberia and the Urals is associated with the risks of recurrent spring frosts. To protect the seed from freezing, it is recommended to immediately mulch the planted beds or lay an agrarian film on top (remembering to open it when shoots appear).

Features of the Siberian region

Due to its resistance to cold weather, carrots have gained popularity among summer residents of Siberia. But it is still worth taking into account the peculiarities of the climate. The region has late spring and a very short growing season. Vegetable crops are selected taking into account their regionalization (this is important for combined beds).

Immediately, you need to exclude varieties with a late ripening period. If the onions still have the opportunity to grow to the required mass, then the situation with carrots is more complicated. Low autumn temperatures cause root crops to lose their commercial appeal - they grow clumsy and pale.

Carrots have gained popularity among summer residents of Siberia

Important! To get a good harvest, not only the sowing time is important, but also the size of the planting material. Before the seeds take root, they draw strength from their own "reserves" and only then begin to take food from the soil.

In Siberia, the seed germination time is longer than in the southern regions. Therefore, there is a risk that the onion, which ripens earlier, will slow down the development of carrots, and it will not have time to become a full-fledged root crop before the cold weather.

In this case, it is recommended to sow carrot seeds at a shallower depth than onion seeds. This will level the possibilities a little.

Mixed landings

Every summer resident wants to use his land rationally. A mixed ridge is the most suitable option to fulfill this desire. You can plant 2-3 crops together, compatible with each other.

In this case, it is necessary to take into account the following points: general requirements for the soil and other conditions of agricultural technology. Planting onions and carrots in joint cultivation is an excellent option for differentiating areas and increasing yields.

Mixed landings

The advantages of mixed beds:

  • the ability to grow more vegetables in small areas;
  • the risk of pest damage is reduced - they are uncomfortable in such beds;
  • the vegetation cover is denser, which improves the structure of the soil;
  • due to the density of planting tops, the earth in the garden is shaded as much as possible, which allows moisture to remain longer.

On joint beds, even weeds are rare, which already makes it easier for the summer resident to take care of the garden. You can combine in one ridge not only onions with carrots or beets, but also other crops, which allows you to turn the site into a design masterpiece.

In order for each plant to receive what it needs, the combination is carried out not only in space - the ripening time of vegetables is also important. It should be different for neighboring crops so that the plants do not jam each other. In this case, the symbiosis of a turnip with a root crop is an ideal combination.

How to plant onions and carrots in the open ground

In order for the carrot and onion to turn out to be excellent in the end, the correct approach to the process is necessary. You should start by preparing the seeds. They will germinate better if presoaked. For nigella, a humate solution is chosen; clean hot water is suitable for carrot seeds.

Some gardeners are sowing in furrows.Then it is better to mix the carrot seed with a little dry sand so that the placement is more even.

It is better to use not grooves, but small holes

Today, another method of planting is more popular - with the help of newsprint and paste. The dimensions of the tape must correspond to the parameters of the furrow. It is lubricated with an adhesive and evenly filled with seeds, maintaining a distance of 2-3 cm between them. Paper strips are placed shallowly in the furrows and sprinkled with earth.

If sevok will be planted in the garden, then it is better to use not grooves, but small holes. The bulb does not go down into the hole to its full length, but in such a way that the tail looks out on the surface. To accelerate the growth of the turnip, some farmers cut the sevok along the neck. This should not be done in advance - only at the time of disembarkation in the garden. But not all varieties are suitable for such a procedure - there is a risk of infection with diseases.

The first shoots will appear onion. After waiting for the feather to reach a size of 8-10 cm, the planting is thinned out and at the same time fertilized using the following solution: 1 tbsp each. kerosene, superphosphate extract, ash, urea in a bucket of water.

Carrot shoots should be expected 3 weeks after planting. After waiting for the first true leaves, the roots are thinned out. The second time, the procedure is carried out when the diameter of the carrots becomes 1 cm.The gap between the fruits must be kept about 4-5 cm.

Growing conditions

Mixed beds should be watered taking into account the agricultural technology of both crops. For onions, abundant irrigation is important in the first half of the growing season. When the feather begins to dry, watering is immediately reduced.

Although carrots prefer good moisture, such a restriction will not harm them. As soon as the onions are harvested from the garden, the irrigation volume for root crops can be increased.

Top dressing with slurry

As for dressings, the first for seeding is usually carried out using slurry. But if the onion is planted together with carrots, this option disappears, since such organics are contraindicated for root crops. From manure, carvines become watery, deformed and not suitable for long-term storage.

Therefore, on combined beds, it is better to use compost (0.5 buckets per square meter) for the first entry and phosphorus fertilizers in the future. 20 days before the turnip harvest, fertilization is suspended and resumed after a few days.

Note! Such restrictions for summer residents are not particularly annoying, because in all other respects, the beds with the addition have only advantages. One of them is facilitated crop care. The farmer is also freed from unnecessary troubles in pest control, thanks to the "alliance" of carrots with onions.

If someone has not yet tried a similar method of growing garden crops, you should first try to plant one small carrot row with onions. At the end of the summer, an experiment will be able to show whether such an option is suitable, and how beneficial such a combination of cultures is.
