Russian yellow gooseberry is the result of the labor of Russian breeders, one of the best varieties with a high yield. The golden-colored berries with a pleasant sour note in taste conquered many gardeners.

Description of the variety

The Russian yellow variety is based on the properties of such varieties as Careless, Curry, Houghton, Shtambovy, Oregon. The gooseberry has absorbed their best qualities: high yield, frost resistance, excellent keeping quality. Fruiting of Russian yellow lasts for 10-17 years.

Gooseberry Russian yellow is unpretentious, care consists of the usual activities typical for all berry bushes. The variety is intended for cultivation in central Russia and warm regions, but takes root in the northern ones. A similar variety of gooseberry has been developed - Russian red. The variety has similar characteristics, but the color of the berries is dark red.

The Russian yellow gooseberry is represented by a spreading shrub up to 1.5 m high.

Description of the characteristics of the variety:

One hundred grams of Russian yellow gooseberries contain from 12 to 35 mg of ascorbic acid. The share of sugar is about 9.3%. The flowering period is from late April to mid-May. Gooseberry is an early honey plant. Blooming earlier than other berry bushes, it attracts bees. Russian yellow is a self-fertile variety. You can get more yield through cross-pollination by placing Plum, Russian and Rose 2 gooseberry varieties next to it.

Harvesting is in July. The fruits adhere firmly to the branches without crumbling. They are used fresh and processed. The dense skin allows the berries to withstand long-distance transportation.

Gooseberry Russian yellow is characterized by a medium ripening period. The yield is also average, but stable.

Important! About 125-145 centners are harvested from 1 hectare. From one bush, you can harvest 4-10 kg without the participation of pollinators. When applying top dressing, the yield is higher.

The variety has a medium resistance to fungal infections, has a good immunity to powdery mildew. Pests are rarely found on this gooseberry, possibly due to the dense, leathery leaves.

Agrotechnical features

Gooseberry varieties Yellow Russian grows best in well-lit places. Do not plant gooseberries in place from under currants or raspberries.

Landing

Russian yellow gooseberry bushes are planted from the first days of autumn, when the bush is gaining vegetative mass before winter. Can be planted in early spring, before sap flow begins. A gooseberry seedling is left in water for a day on the eve of planting. The fit follows the classic method.

Planting gooseberries

The distance between the nearest gooseberry bushes is about 2 m. The planting site is cleared of weeds. Equal proportions of humus or compost mixed with 1 glass of ash are poured into the ground for a planting pit measuring 60x60x70 cm. Superphosphate (60-80 g) can be added. With infertile, stony, clay or sandy soil, the amount of nutrient mixture is increased by increasing the planting pit.

The root collar is buried 5-7 cm so that the roots and shoots grow better. When planting, the branches are cut off by two-thirds, the wounds are treated with antiseptics. The gooseberry seedling is watered, the ground is mulched with cut grass or dry soil to avoid cracking in the top layer of the soil. You can dig a hole with a diameter (40-50 cm) along the near-trunk circle, then mulch with peat with sawdust in a layer of 5 cm.

Care

The soil should be fertile, loamy, sandy loam. Acidic soil with an indicator above 5.5 needs to be deoxidized by adding lime (200g / m2). The close occurrence of groundwater is undesirable, since this variety does not tolerate an excess of moisture. However, watering should be regular.

How to water a gooseberry bush

Summer watering of gooseberry bushes is carried out 2-3 times a week, 1-2 buckets of water. Watering is especially important during flowering (May) and fruiting (from mid-June). In the absence of rain, it is recommended to water in September as well.

If fertilizing was done during planting, then in the next few years you can not worry about it. After 3 years, in the fall, potassium sulfate (20 g), superphosphate (15 g) and rotted manure (6-7 kg) are added to the gooseberry, applied for each 1 m2. In the spring, after 2 years, ammonium nitrate is given: for young gooseberry seedlings, 15-20 g are required, for an adult bush - up to 30 g. Sometimes ammonium nitrate is replaced with urea, reducing the portions by half.

Gooseberries require annual sanitary pruning with the removal of diseased and crooked branches, which is carried out in April or autumn. A 5-7 year old shrub is freed from old branches with dark and cracked bark. The bush should have 2 to 4 branches each year. The number of all branches is about 20-30 pieces.

Trimming scheme

Branches with berries need props to avoid rotting when in contact with the soil. After 15 years of rich fruiting, the gooseberry bush needs rejuvenating pruning. All branches are cut to form new growth.

Preparing for winter

Note! The Russian yellow variety is not afraid of frost, it winters well under the snow, even in harsh conditions. Due to the presence of thorns, rodents are not afraid of the bush.

You only need to take care of the cleaning of the props and garters, as well as the metal wire. Contact with metal during frost will lead to freezing of the shoots. They carry out preventive measures against pests and fungi: the near-stem circle is cleaned of fallen fruits and foliage, the old mulch is replaced with a new one.

Reproduction

You can propagate the Russian yellow gooseberry by layering. In the spring, a lignified branch at the age of 1-2 years is fixed with a bracket in a damp groove about 10 cm deep so that roots appear by autumn. After sprinkling the layers with soil by 2 cm, they wait for the emergence of shoots 10 cm long. They sprinkle, pouring a mixture of garden soil with compost or mature humus under each of them. The procedure is repeated after a couple of weeks.

Gooseberry propagation by cuttings

The Russian yellow variety tolerates reproduction by dividing the bush. In the last days of autumn, the bush is dug up, divided into 2 or 3 parts with a saw or ax. Planting is done with a depth of 5-6 cm lower than that of the main bush.

The gooseberry Russian yellow has a high yield

The disadvantage of Russian yellow gooseberries is the presence of thorns. Thorny branches make harvesting and pruning difficult. The breeders have bred non-shipless gooseberry varieties: Kolobok, Malachite, Grushenka, Uralsky beshipny, Commander. The best varieties of gooseberries include the Ural emerald, Spring, Prune, Beryl, Krasnoslavyansky, Date, Northern Captain.
